Successful completion of the professional training plan for Fagor Ederlan employees with the collaboration of Mondragon Unibertsitatea

The programme began last November and consisted of 376 training hours.

The training plan conducted for the requalification of Fagor Ederlan workers has been successfully completed. The initiative has been carried out with the collaboration of the Polytechnic School of Mondragon Unibertsitatea and has enabled 45 people to be retrained, 98% of those initially enrolled.

The main objectives of this training plan have been to promote employability and new professional development opportunities for the cooperative's less qualified staff. Likewise, Fagor Ederlan has also successfully improved the polyvalence and mobility of its staff.

As stated by Raquel Belategi, head of the programme at Fagor Ederlan, “the spirit of this strategic commitment is closely linked to our cooperative values and our people-based organisation".

The programme has involved both partners from different Fagor Ederlan plants who are linked to manufacturing and work in shifts, as well as around twenty teachers. The theoretical-practical approach of the programme has covered skills in key technologies for Fagor Ederlan such as casting, machining, automation systems and the organisation of industrial processes.

According to Raquel Belategi, "this programme has been an example of co-responsibility between the cooperative and its members. Both have made a great effort: trainees have invested time and dedication, while the financial investment and organisation provided by the cooperative also represent a considerable effort. Fagor Ederlan, for its part, fosters its people training strategy by implementing formulas that enable them to contribute added value to the organisation".

Raul Fernandez, programme manager at the university, stated that "when designing the programme, we focused on the key technologies of Fagor Ederlan's production processes; in addition, we wanted to offer a multi-site and multi-shift training model, which suits the working conditions of Fagor Ederlan's staff. People are very satisfied and enthusiastic about the training. The method was different and some people needed time before they could adapt to the streaming learning system; however, they were very aware of the great advantages of this method, as it has allowed the training to be carried out simultaneously in two locations. Furthermore, the training was highly valued for the possibilities it offers. Although the effort of combining work and study is important, the trainees were enthusiastic about the requalification, personal and professional development and the opportunities that will arise for them after completing the training".

This is how Belén Rivero, working partner of the machining plant in Arrasate and participant in the programme, puts it: "I started the programme in November. Due to my work schedule, I have always attended classes in the afternoon and by streaming. This new method was difficult to adapt to at first, but in the end we got used to it".

Belén is very satisfied with the programme: "The opportunity was good and we had to make the most of it. Although we did miss more practical work, we really enjoyed it when we got put the training into practice; it was great". She also highlights the quality of the group: "I would like to emphasise how good the group and its members were. I am very glad to have shared these months with them".

Goiuria Sagardui, Head of Training for Professionals at the Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, claims that "the new challenges posed by industry present the university with the strategic challenge of helping to retrain operators. She is also pleased to see that the training proposal developed for Fagor Ederlan has contributed to improving the training of its professionals, as well as improving its competitive position for the future".

Fagor Ederlan and Mondragon Unibertsitatea would like to acknowledge and commend all the participants for their participation, work and results. This new initiative would not have been possible them.

Congratulations to all of them!!
