Fagor Ederlan consolidates its position as a global supplier in the automotive sector

Fagor Ederlan consolidates its position as a global supplier in the automotive sector. World map

Fagor Ederlan Group’s international growth is due to a strategy based on customer proximity

The Fagor Ederlan Group is a global component supplier capable of providing its products in various regions of the world simultaneously

The Fagor Ederlan Group, a leading supplier of automotive components specialising in Chassis and Powertrain applications, achieved sales of €685 million in 2018 and employs more than 4,500 people in 18 production plants worldwide.

The company’s sustained international growth follows a strategy that is based on customer proximity, something in strong demand by this extremely exacting industrial sector, however, this forms part of this Guipuzcoan cooperative’s very way of being and working.

The Fagor Ederlan Group is a global component supplier with the capacity to provide its solutions in various regions of the world simultaneously. This characteristic is a fundamental part of the company’s DNA and has influenced its development over the past 15 years. During this period, The Fagor Ederlan Group has opened four international plants, two of them in the Basque Country, as well as the Edertek technology centre.

This strategy based on innovation, international growth and proximity to the manufacturer responds to needs expected by the demanding automotive sector.

Innovative Capacity

Innovation is another of the Fagor Ederlan Group’s cornerstones. It is its way of doing things and rising to current and future market challenges. Some of the main areas on which it focuses its technological development include the lightening of components to reduce vehicle CO2 emissions; improving product performance so that vehicles are increasingly safer and more sustainable, and industry 4.0.

All of the Fagor Ederlan Group’s innovation activities focus on groundbreaking innovation programmes in product, process and materials.

More than 350 engineers in the Group and more than 50 researchers at its Edertek technology centre are involved in R+D. Similarly, the company actively engages in innovation based partnerships with universities, technology centres and companies, such as Mondragon University, Ikerlan and Tecnalia.

Leader in key technologies for the sector

The Fagor Ederlan Group is leader in four of the key technologies for the metal components sector: iron casting, low pressure aluminium casting, aluminium die casting and machining.

The company has 18 production plants, with a capacity to supply around 50 million components worldwide, meaning that one car out of every two in the world is fitted with Fagor Ederlan Group components.

To achieve these business figures, the cooperative works very closely with an extensive network of suppliers at a global level.

The expansion that the Group has experienced in recent years has posed a challenge in supply chain management, which is still at the consolidation phase. Accordingly, centralisation of the Group’s purchases within the corporate area, including the area of supplier quality and purchasing processes, as well as having a common corporate Management Model and Industrial Model, all help to comply with the standards of quality and management defined by the organisation.
