Towards sustainable mobility
Vehicle electrification is an unstoppable process that is advancing at a rapid pace. A process driven by a global commitment to tackle climate change. A commitment that requires an effort from all of society and industry towards carbon neutrality models and decarbonisation strategies that ultimately affect all those involved in the value chain.
The electric vehicle, consequently, not only represents a challenge and goal in our business, but more so a reality that is transforming our sector that will be predominantly electric by 2030. The industry’s commitment towards sustainability and the arrival of the electric vehicle bring changes to our lives, cities and mobility in general.
When we think of electric we think of the powertrain, however, other vehicle systems will also need new requirements.
Electric vehicle brake systems
In electric vehicles 80% of the braking comes from regenerative brakes, so conventional mechanical brakes will be less used. Moreover, if weight reduction in ICE vehicles is key due to its impact on reducing CO2 emissions, then similar weight reduction in electric vehicles is even more important due to a need to increase the battery’s energy efficiency.
This reduced use of mechanical brakes increases the potential problem of corrosion on brake discs and drums, with the ensuing operational and aesthetic related issues. Accordingly, specific solutions that are highly resistant to corrosion are required.
The lower braking requirement coupled with this need, suggests that other brake systems, such as the drum brake system, are required. The application of this system, traditionally used on the rear axle, makes sense again in this new electric environment. Fitting disc brakes on the rear axle may be unnecessary in certain applications, and this would also increase the risk of rust and particulate matter. However, this issue disappears with fully sealed brake drums.
Aluminium drums, engineering components for the cars of tomorrow
As experts in brake functions, Fagor Ederlan boasts an innovation and development programme aimed at providing specific solutions for electric vehicles, where sustainability, weight reduction and improved performance are the driving force behind the development of these advanced technological proposals.
Proposals that take shape in a wide range of solutions for brake discs and drums, such as Bimetal Discs, our line of development with sustainable coatings and EDERALSI Aluminium Discs and Drums.
In addition to these proposals for Aluminium Discs, is the recent development of EDERALSI Aluminium Brake Drums. An optimal, corrosion resistant, low-weight solution for the rear axle that incorporates sustainable processes related to energy efficiency, recyclability and reduced waste.
An optimal solution for the development of sustainable mobility.
