Fagor Ederlan and Mondragon University join forces to upskill workers

More than 40 Fagor Ederlan workers have already signed up for a 376-hour training plan designed by both entities that will run from November 2021 to June 2022.

Courses in professional training, personal development and to improve employability are a constant at Fagor Ederlan. An example of this is the personalised training plan that Fagor Ederlan has designed with the Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon University to upskill those cooperative workers with low academic profiles.

The aim of this training plan, whose philosophy is closely related to the organisation’s cooperative values, is twofold; on the one hand, to open up the worker’s opportunities for internal promotion and, on the other, to provide Fagor Ederlan more options for movement between jobs, since the same professional will be able to access a wider range of positions.

The training will be given by Mondragon University. This type of training that the university conducts for active workers, with more than 7,000 people trained per year, helps to improve the company competitiveness.

Just as Goiuria Sagardui, Head of Continuous Training at the Engineering Faculty, has remarked, “we understand that the upskilling of workers will be a crucial aspect for organisations in coming years and we want to accompany companies in the training and specialisation of professionals ”.

The plan has been designed jointly between Mondragon University and Fagor Ederlan training technicians with an extensive knowledge of the training needs and subjects to be taught, in order to achieve a theoretical-practical approach that adapts to true situations at Fagor Ederlan, the characteristics of benchmark jobs and the processes involved. Accordingly, skills in key technologies for Fagor Ederlan’s business activities will be covered, such as casting, machining, automation systems and process organisation.

The training programme is flexible and, since it involves workers from different plants who work in shifts, it will take place at various locations,  with about twenty teachers, experts in each subject. Programme content will be taught twice daily in different locations and even via streaming each day with the participation of support teachers. Furthermore, virtual and practical simulations will be carried out in both the Polytechnic’s laboratories and Fagor Ederlan’s production plants.

Raquel Belategi, head of the training programme at Fagor Ederlan, says “this training and education plan represents a benefit, challenge as well as an opportunity for the Fagor Ederlan participants. We are aware of the considerable effort required from all of them, however, with this programme it is possible to significantly boost versatility, personal development and, consequently, increase the added value they provide, as well as employability at Fagor Ederlan. The participants will be able to take on new challenges and responsibilities, develop further and participate in different projects. Without a doubt it is a sound strategic move”.
